Suddenly, Itachi’s eyes opened and they were focused on Sasuke with an intensity that made Sasuke feel naked and exposed. Completely vulnerable. “Sasuke,” Itachi drawled in a tone that felt—it sparked a desperation in Sasuke’s belly. Danger.
“A-Aniki...” Sasuke mumbled, trying to look away from his brother. But he couldn’t. And then—suddenly, everything was shrouded in darkness, his vision blurry around the edges. It could only mean one thing. Genjutsu. “Aniki!” He yelled into the abyss, a little belligerently. “That’s not fair, I didn’t even have a chance to--!”
Before Sasuke could comprehend what was happening, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and whipped around to face red, spinning eyes. “Otouto,” Itachi said slowly, his voice low, dangerous. “You should always be at the ready.”
Sasuke felt his cheeks warm. Itachi was so close, his hand was on his shoulder, and lately, Itachi had avoided touching him. Sasuke hadn’t realized just how touch-starved he was for his brother. Was it so wrong?
Of course, it was. But Sasuke didn’t care.

"You’re so noisy and annoying,” Sasuke murmured, leaning forward to brush their lips together in a soft way. “I thought you were going to stand me up,” he admitted quietly, hands teasing just under the hem of Sasuke’s shirt.
Sasuke shivered slightly at the ghost of a touch, and rocked forward, pleased to find that Naruto’s body was, as usual, just as happy to see him as Naruto seemed to be. Sometimes, he knew, Naruto wore a brave face for the outside world. But never for Sasuke. In front of Sasuke, Naruto was always his raw, unfiltered, self. It made Sasuke feel as though being vulnerable in front of Naruto was all right. They were that way with each other, neither one more than the other. “Why would I stand you up?” he murmured, pleased with the way Naruto’s breath hitched.
“Because—because it’s Christmas and I thought you might not want to celebrate with me,” Naruto admitted, glancing away.
Sasuke pressed his nose into the crook of Naruto’s neck, inhaling the scent of him. “I wouldn’t want to spend it with anyone but you,” Sasuke retorted, feeling safe with his face hidden so that Naruto couldn’t see the heaviness of that truth.

Life was creeping back into his extremities. Itachi was beginning to feel strong again. Was it Sasuke’s closeness? How? He’d been a moment from death, and now, with Sasuke looking at him—almost with a shine of hopefulness in his face, an expression that had been saved for him when they’d been younger.
An expression that brought an ache to Itachi’s chest. He drew in a heaving breath, and lifted his hand to press into the centre of Sasuke’s forehead like he had done before he’d fallen, leaving another smear of his own blood there. “I’m sorry, Sasuke. This will not be the last time, as I’d expected.”
There were tears sliding from Sasuke’s dark, bloodied, eyes. “I failed,” Sasuke said quietly, shaking breaths between his words.
Itachi’s fingers slid until he was cupping Sasuke’s cheek. It was clear that Sasuke was completely out of chakra, that he might perish here. Itachi would not allow it. Not even if it cost him the last bit of his own chakra. The chakra that had begun to grow stronger again, despite his effort to die. “I’m the who failed,” Itachi said quietly, eyes focused on the blurry outline that was Sasuke’s face. “I failed, even in the end, to die for you. To give you what you needed.”

Sasuke realized, now, that he’d never be free. Honestly, though it had taken over ten years to admit to himself, he didn’t want to be free.
How many times had they fought, stalemates, only for Naruto to come after him again and again?
And then, one last battle, one last chance to break the bond, to finally, finally, be free of his last strand of dependence on another person to make him happy. And another stalemate.
They’d lain there, bleeding so much, there had been so much blood, and Naruto had talked the whole time. Told Sasuke about his life in Konoha, the life he’d been so sure was over. Sasuke had ached at the words, guilt (not for the first time) tinging the ends of his consciousness.
He’d wanted to give up, to let the darkness carry him away to his death, but then Naruto had murmured, blurrily and almost too quiet to hear (but when it came to Naruto, Sasuke would always be listening): “But I love you, asshole. You can’t die without knowing that. You can’t die without me. Can’t ever go anywhere without me ever again.” And Sasuke’s world had filled with a light, a hope that he’d never allowed himself to feel
