To get the exterminations to stop, Charlie has to do some things that she really doesn't want to do. She's already tried talking to Adam, she already tried convincing heaven that redemption is possible. Nothing has worked. It's time to switch gears. If they won't accept her hotel as a decent replacement for the exterminations, perhaps Sera will accept a third alternative.

Summary
In another timeline, Adam never left Hell during the Harrowing, when Christ broke into The Pit during the time between His Death and Resurrection. In another timeline, Charlie Morningstar grew not only disillusioned with the concept of redeeming sinners, but grew actively hostile to her parents' kingdom of Hell.
On meeting a newly arrived sinner on the day of Extermination, Adam was convinced to try and find a solution, and finds his obstacle is someone that - by multiple metrics - should have been his ally.

Summary
Adam wakes up in a body different enough from his old one that he can pull off being a different person. He convinces the hotel staff that he’s just an ordinary, recently deceased sinner looking for redemption as a ploy to get himself back to Heaven.
The trouble therein lies when “Comet, the hotel’s beloved music instructor” starts getting carried away with his own bit.
