Summary
His daughter's skin peels off onto his fingertips until there's nothing left but ashes. Ashes, and ashes, gathering in his lap.
For that fleeting, horrifying second, Tony thinks it's happened again. That his kid died in his arms, again. That not even his vice-grip and his desperate, hammering heart are enough to keep them alive.
He blinks, and she's back together. Whole. Alive.
This fear is constant. He's scared out of his goddamn mind that she's going to disappear into thin air, just like Peter did. That he might have to put her back together the way he never possibly could.
or, Tony was a father before he became a father. His relationship with Morgan is fundamentally affected by the loss of his first kid, and what that looks like.

There’s a piece of paper. Folded in thirds, with her name written across.
Ellie.
Joel’s handwriting was always sharp. Harsh edges, straight lines; quick, gruff moves of his pen. But her name, Ellie, is written ever so carefully. The Ls loop, curved and soft. Slanted slightly, the word melds into the page. Like ripples on the water, it is a part of the print. She belongs there.
He wrote her a letter. Not something general, not to whomever, but probably Ellie. It was addressed directly to her.
or, Joel leaves more than a corpse behind. His last words aren't gone in a breath, they're etched in ink.

Always a little too eager to get into a fight. Twitching with the need to protect, and defend, and attack if it comes down to it. Shoved into corners, forced into silence and compliance. Bursting with the fire of justice, the burning desire to love and be loved.
Joel sees too much of himself in Ellie.
He wants to protect her. Save her from the person he became. The brute he is. She deserves better than what he is. Her future is still salvageable.

She refuses to believe that they’re just dreams, because her subconscious couldn’t conjure images like that. It has to be some special kind of Hell that she’s thrust into every night.
She decides she can’t sleep anymore. Because sleeping has proven itself an enemy worse than exhaustion.

One, two, three fingers wrapped around his forearm. A bright pink bruise on the side of his neck. The last remnants of a man he hates, and loves, and despises so entirely that it makes him shake. It makes him smoke a pack a day. It makes him stomp around the flat with nothing in his head but the roaring anger, and sadness, and fear that had consumed him the entire year prior.
