When it goes like this:

We’ll talk for hours and lie on the backseat
And then one fateful night when everything changes

And the simple fact of the matter is Hiccup doesn’t want it to end at all, so he takes the on and off again of whatever dance they’re doing. Astrid is his only friend and brings this prick of heat that thaws him out when he’s with her and stays with him even in her absence for a few precious hours.
She’s volatile and unpredictable. She doesn’t call him for a week and then appears like nothing happened. Hiccup doesn’t think much of it. He’s a secret, and she’s got a life. He misses her. She’s the one thing he looks forward to. He’s dependent on her for warmth, which is probably why he prefers her explosive side over her lukewarm, friendly one. At least when she burns him the cold and numbness are soothing. -

“You again,” Hiccup greeted her. “Still think we’re lying?” She stopped in front of the counter, eyes stony but the fear behind them wasn’t well concealed. She was clutching each of her elbows with the opposite hand. Her blonde hair was loose and a little wild, like she had run her fingers through it quite a few times since she had done it.
“How - how long does it take?” she asked quietly. “To - how long do I have?” Hiccup pushed himself upright and ambled over to the shelves behind him.
“Without this? Usually around a couple months. With this?” He shook the bottle gently. “Um. Longest the patient ever lasted was up to a year.” The blonde stared at the bottle in his hands bleakly.
“A year at most?” she asked faintly.
Of course, the universe hated him, so the person he’d fall for would be a girl who was already dying because she was in love with someone else.

I don't know if I've said this enough, but this is literally legendary. This is famous. Everyone should know about this and have read it and loved it. Everyone should reference this. It's perfect. Dark Hiccup seems plausible, and Astrid is a perfectly badass warrior that can still embrace her feminine side. Real life issues like rape and alcohol addiction are not romanticized, but dealt with well. And it's hot and ingenious and amazing. I'm telling you: read this
