Harry Potter, the boy who lived, his very own prophesied enemy, was bare beneath his gaze and Voldemort allowed himself a narrow smile, thin lips curving over sharp teeth as he turned his gaze back to his sleeping captive. He let his eyes linger greedily, admiring the graceful turn of an ankle and the curled fingers of one hand, thrown up dramatically above the boy’s head where he collapsed against the cushions like some martyred saint. The length of a thigh, drawn up halfway to Harry’s narrow chest, coyly shadowed the boy’s centre from his gaze, but it only added to the mystique of the tableau. Without the muggle garments to spoil it, the image before him was timeless, one that could easily have belonged to any century. The sleeping youth, the rumpled linens, the dark, heavy furniture and the rich colours of the rugs and walls–it was a portrait painted by a master’s hand.

Harry’s no exception to this rule. Becoming an adult means picking where you belong, but he’s been pushing it off, trying to eke out just a few more months with his friends before everything changes. When the choice is taken out of his hands, Harry realizes that he had more to lose than he thought, and that the changes he’s going through might be more than the simple trials of adulthood.

Gorgeously written homage to the Little Mermaid that chucks most of the original story out the window and only keeps the parts worth polishing. Their FL is fierce and driven, beautifully cold and deeply empathetic in turn, and I adore her. Possibly my favorite rewrite of this classic story, and I"ve read dozens of them, published and fanfiction alike, because I have a weakness for fairy tales. Highly recommended.

Based on a Prompt from Reign | RudeHellion on Discord. Prompt: Harry Potter knows his parents were bad people. He feels it on a level too deep to argue with, the product of a dysfunctional childhood with the Dursley’s. When people praise them or compare him to them, he feels uncomfortable and angry. After he learns about Voldemort, he can’t help but wonder— could the man who killed two bad people really be all that bad himself?
