Summary
There are so many words Mike has yet to say, all meant for Will. Like how the flowers have blossomed so beautifully now that the Upside Down has vanished, or how he thinks of him whenever a new X-Men issue is out; how could he not?
There are so many unspoken truths, painful secrets that make Mike's cheeks burn at night as he thinks about them till the break of day; things he has yet to share. Secrets he's embarrassed about, for how could he not be?
And there is no one to convince him that everything is fine or to hold him close when he's about to fall. There is no longer the emerald glow of Will's eyes in his own when he searches for it; simply shut eyelids on pale skin and a steady breath that proves he's alive. For days on end, he finds his way back to the hospital every morning. There, he'll meet and write him, and he'll wait; he'll always wait for him. As long as there are words, he'll wait. Until he wakes up again.
Or: Will is in a coma and Mike visits him every day.

Summary
“Sure you don’t want to play, Mike?” asks an out-of-breath Will before he drinks from a water bottle he brought.
“I’m fine,” he mumbles.
“He’d probably trip on his shoelaces anyway,” Lucas laughs, barely out of breath, drinking from the bottle Will handed him.
Mike hears Max scoff at his side and Lucas shoots her the biggest smile he can probably ever put on his face before he reaches her to kiss her cheek, and Mike rolls his eyes internally before Will comes a little closer, leaning towards him.
“You ok?”
“Yeah, sure.” And when Will obviously shows that he doesn’t believe him he adds: “Just a little bored I guess.”
He barely sees the hurt in his best friend’s eyes before he turns to Dustin.
“He’s thinking too much.”
“What about?” Will asks, but he keeps his gaze on Mike.
“I don’t know, it’s just annoying.”Or, three months after everything, the Party tries to move on and figure out what to do next while it’s sunny outside, but not in their mind.

Summary
Spending the summer in Hawkins had been wonderful - they’d moved back in the middle of June, integrating into their new home and re-familiarizing themselves with the town. Their friends had, of course, welcomed them with open arms, and the rest of the summer had been spent like it always had - hanging out around town, taking over Steve’s pool and abusing his summer job at the video store, sleepovers in Mike’s basement and afternoons at the arcade.
It had been wonderful, yet also overwhelming.
One thing he hadn’t missed in California, was the agony of being close to Mike.
The kicker of that, of course, is that there had been the agony of being away from Mike.
Will’s conclusion is that he’s just meant to suffer.
Are they ready to be swept off their feet?

Summary
Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and, to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

Summary
Mike feels a little or a lot, never controlled and always one extreme or the other. It’s visible in the way he snaps at his friends when he gets too angry or too upset, and it’s audible in his relentless stutter that appears when there’s attention on him. It’s laced in the lies that he grinds out through his teeth, claiming that he’s fine, and it’s in the fight to appear as though he’s swimming gently through a body of water when in reality he can’t keep afloat.
His feelings are like waves, gentle or all consuming as they rise and fall with the tide, and nothing drowns him quite like Will Byers.
