"Philip's mindset was flawed even in his awakening, however. He still had distrust in the back of his mind."
When left vulnerable and alone, even the strongest can collapse. Philip, on the other hand, is very well aware that he does not qualify for that title. Time and time again, he chose to flee, abandoning those he cared for and leaving them to die, despite his best efforts. And yet, all the same, he carried with him the remnants of their trust.
Just once, he wants to live up to that trust, to be worthy of all the things he had been given. Desperately, he wants to grow.
When his pain and despair are at their peak, and when the voice only he could hear was at her loudest, Philip chooses to open his eyes and uncover his ears.
So long as he can stand up straight, he can change even the smallest of things- even if he burns himself to ash in the process.

It wasn't supposed to end up like this. He'd followed all of the proper steps, even went so far as to give up his own life to atone. And even with her setback, stealing the Light for herself, things still could end up the way they were supposed to.
The way *she* wanted them to.
Then, of course, the Head had to interfere. You can't have nice things in the City, after all.
Perhaps he'll be able to achieve her goal still, though.. Or a semblance of it, at the very least...

This is basically what I like to think happens whenever a Sinner gets an E.G.O, really wish they got stories like IDs do. BTW, this takes place a bit after Canto 1 and before Canto 2, but has Canto 4 spoilers.

The foreign memories Zorian finds, tossed haphazardly into his own meticulously organized mind, turn out to belong to a boy named Harry Potter; the dark space he just woke up in is the cupboard where Harry usually sleeps, but which he is currently locked inside of while his relatives (the Dursleys: an Aunt Petunia, an Uncle Vernon, and a cousin Dudley) are on holiday for the summer. The world Zorian has found himself in is entirely unfamiliar, but Harry's memories, at least, know what everything is – kitchen appliances, the city of London, cars and televisions and the language of English.
Or: Zach has had it too good for too long, being the only one with an alarming angelic contract wrought onto his soul. It's Zorian's turn to experience distasteful divine intervention and non-consensual dimensional displacement.

The mechanisms in their clocks start to click. Dante wonders if they’re hallucinating it since they’re not trying to speak anymore. But the clock keeps ticking, faster now, backwards, but it’s not the same as a normal rewinding. Dante feels a tug in their ribcage, not unlike the first time they met the sinners.
It’s nostalgic, in a way. Sometimes they wish they could be brought back, to before any of this happened, to before-
Dante falls backwards. The star glows above them.
It feels strange, to be fully bathed in its light, with its full attention on Dante for once.
Dante can’t figure out what it means, but the star cries,
and it cries,
and it cries out for Dante to-
Wake up, Dante thinks, and when they regain consciousness it’s like boiling water has been poured over them. Icy at first, then all at once it’s too hot.
(or, a story where Dante's clock had another mechanism no one had known about)
