"Philip's mindset was flawed even in his awakening, however. He still had distrust in the back of his mind."
When left vulnerable and alone, even the strongest can collapse. Philip, on the other hand, is very well aware that he does not qualify for that title. Time and time again, he chose to flee, abandoning those he cared for and leaving them to die, despite his best efforts. And yet, all the same, he carried with him the remnants of their trust.
Just once, he wants to live up to that trust, to be worthy of all the things he had been given. Desperately, he wants to grow.
When his pain and despair are at their peak, and when the voice only he could hear was at her loudest, Philip chooses to open his eyes and uncover his ears.
So long as he can stand up straight, he can change even the smallest of things- even if he burns himself to ash in the process.

It wasn't supposed to end up like this. He'd followed all of the proper steps, even went so far as to give up his own life to atone. And even with her setback, stealing the Light for herself, things still could end up the way they were supposed to.
The way *she* wanted them to.
Then, of course, the Head had to interfere. You can't have nice things in the City, after all.
Perhaps he'll be able to achieve her goal still, though.. Or a semblance of it, at the very least...
