Summary

On a hunt to clear a wraith from a local wishing shrine, Jaskier and AU Jaskier accidentally swap places.
Neither realizes it until they notice that Geralt is acting... different.

.Jaskier peered into the well, at the water dark and still at the bottom.
It seemed sinister enough.
Even as he could feel Geralt’s eyes on him, he hissed, “Oh, benevolent wishing well, I wish Valdo Marx to choke to death on one of his horrid high C's.”
“If you die from that, I’m not saving you,” Geralt groaned.
But they both knew it wasn’t true. Their last horrible experience with wishes proved that.
Besides, Jaskier thought as he stared down into the well, that wasn’t his real wish. 'If a wish were to come true, it’s that you’d return my love... sometime in my lifetime.'
“Ignore him. As long as Valdo’s dead. Very dead.”
"Jaskier, quit it."
"And I wish Roach would live for a hundred years."
“Jaskier, I’m serious, something’s—”
“In good health, of course!”
“Jaskier, would you—!”
“And I wish—!"
Jaskier was blinded by a sudden burst of light, there and gone in a blink — which must have come from the wraith floating menacingly over him.

“Do what?”
Jaskier swallows hard, bringing one knee up and pressing his forehead to it, his arms wrapped loosely around his leg. His voice, when he finally speaks, is soft, pain clear in his tone.
“Don’t give me hope.” He tells her, swallowing hard after he says it. “I can’t do it again.” He turns his head to look at her from beneath his fringe. “I spent decades hoping, Yennefer. And it got me fuck all besides the dressing down of my life on top of that fucking mountain and a fun little session of torture later.”
(Jaskier hoped that he could have more with Geralt once, and all it had gotten him was abandoned on a mountain. He won’t make the same mistake twice.)
