Since Danse hates Nick and Hancock's relationship so much, they take it upon themselves to make Danse's life hell. As funny as it seems at first, its still upsetting.

“My guess is because the Hanahaki plant is one based around the emotions of the afflicted,” Dr. Amari said. “So it must care more about that than the person’s physical form.”
“What do you mean, ‘the emotions of the afflicted’?” Nick asked. “What does it do?”
“The Hanahaki plant affects those who are in love.”
Nick’s non-existent heart stopped.

Nick finds a strange plant in the wasteland that he's never seen before. Once he touches it, he suddenly starts feeling a lot of pain when he's around Hancock.

Summary
Nick figured he should tell him the truth. But he couldn’t bring himself to. How was he supposed to tell Hancock that the reason he was worried about him being around was because he needed to save face against a rumor that was actually true? How was he supposed to tell Hancock that he didn’t want people knowing they were in a relationship because he didn’t want to upset the Diamond City residents too much? Hancock was bullheaded and strong-willed; he let people know who he was and they could deal with it if they didn’t like it. He had defended Nick more times than he could count, including in Goodneighbor, where people’s opinions of him mattered most. Nick felt like a coward next to him.
So he said, “Things have been hectic there, too. I’ve been working a lot of long nights.”
Hancock still seemed disappointed, but he also seemed to understand. Nick kind of hated himself.

When a new newspaper springs up in Diamond City, they start spreading rumors that Nick has been sneaking Hancock in. He does his best to stop the rumors, but that's hard to do when they're true.
