There was a rumor circulating about one of the forbidden regions.
Something strange is happening in the Desert of Death. Some say there's an oasis formed over there only to disappear in the next second like an illusion. The clouds as dark as the night will pass by, bearing dead mana. Sandstorms started to occur randomly, making it hard to walk outside or seek shelter.
It became so dangerous that it was certain that setting one foot outside the wall, the guards will turned a blind eye because unspeakable suffering and a horrible death await those who escape this territory.
However, a woman set her foot here with a wish in mind as she marched through the obstacles.

He had no idea why or how did he get here but he will like it if he can get home after getting a peaceful and undisturbed sleep.
Needless to say, it's delayed. Not impossible because with him exist, everything is possible.
Living in the past and possibly in another world, where technology barely exist and man-eating demons who may or may not be powerful than his foes were lurking around, that's quite an obstacles.

In her frustration, Jinx did the only thing she could think of: she reached for the Hexcore. She shoved it, attempting to move it, but Viktor reacted instantly. His hand clamped down on her wrist like a vice, and in a heartbeat, she was pinned to the table. Her braids tumbled down, clattering against the Hexcore.
A cold shiver of fear ran through her body as she realized the strength he was using was inhuman. One hand gripped her neck, the other pressed her leg against the table. His eyes burned with an unnatural light, and his voice sounded almost otherworldly.
"My dear Jinx," he said in a chilling tone, "nothing must interfere with our work. This is perfection. The Final Glorious Evolution"
Panic flared in her chest as Jinx scanned the room, desperate for a weapon. But it was futile—Viktor had taken all her gear as part of their agreement. She was completely defenseless.
"Viktor, please let me go," she begged, feeling her vision blur. Her body weakened, and her mind began to slip into darkness.
It's not a total AU, but there are discrepancies in some actions.

Viktor is recruited in the most obnoxious way possible.
“Pay up,” Jinx orders Viktor happily, because she has just become slightly richer. It’s not the cogs she is interested in, but beating someone gives her such immense satisfaction, that cards - hazard - are just an extension of other ways she beats up other people. She indulges when she can, which admittedly is not that often.
The guy cannot even walk, but he looks like a smart cookie, so. Pay up, right?
“I believe you cheated,” Viktor tells her calmly.
