“A wing,” Meryl corrects. “There’s just one.”
Wolfwood sighs out a breath, long and heavy, smoke curling up into the starry sky above them. “Alright. I guess with everything else he has goin’ on, this shouldn’t be that much of a surprise."

Summary
Meryl kept thinking back to Tonis, small and still so young in his mothers arms. She kept thinking about the fact that if she held onto him a bit stronger, if she had more conviction, he might still have both of his arms. And about how if she had any less of it, Wolfwood might have not woken back up again in that bar. Surely, getting a bit scratched up was worth saving someone’s life. But that’s not how Wolfwood saw it. To him, she’d forever be just some defenseless little thing that stumbled around helplessly and had to be protected. And for all that he complained about Vash having a self-sacrificial streak, he'd rather bleed out on the floor than admit he had needed help.

Wolfwood almost dies, Meryl saves him and gets hurt in the process. They have a fight about it.

Summary
Being around Vash felt like that. Like she was following an ever-ticking bomb, waiting for it to blow up in her face. And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to look away, to go back to the safety of her office. Meryl has spent most of her life being told what would be best for her, what would be safest. First by her family, urging her to go into insurance, then her coworkers telling her to stay in November and report locally where nothing truly dangerous ever happened. And now that she was finally out in the field her partner tried to discourage her from anything that had the potential to land them in trouble.
But following Vash the Stampede was the closest she’s ever gotten to feeling like she did something that actually mattered. It was dangerous and terrifying. Meryl never wanted to do anything else.

He blinks again, turning to the source of the commotion – just in time to see something unfurl out of Vash. In his blurry sight, it’s a grotesque movement, an undulating mass bursting through his shoulder and casting his body in terrible light.
Wolfwood has been taught the doctrine. In a moment of terror, he casts his eyes downward in supplication. Be not afraid. Ha. What a joke.

Summary
He wanted to look down at Vash’s prosthetic hand resting on the seat between them, already imagining the soft curl of his glass-like fingers, the invitation of an upturned palm. He wouldn’t reach out, but he liked entertaining the thought that he could, wondering if Vash’s hand would be smooth against his own, if it would be warm or cold.
He wanted to look, just look –but he couldn’t open his eyes.
After being kidnapped by bounty hunters and stranded in the desert, Wolfwood, Vash, and Meryl are left to rely on each other.
Or: Wolfwood contends with guilt and forgiveness and doesn't know how to have friends.

Summary
Vash isn't human. There's so much to him that is too much, too different, too weird to be comfortable around people. Humanoid, not human. Slowly, he starts to let Wolfwood see what that means. 5 times Vash showed Wolfwood the ways he wasn't human and 1 time Wolfwood made Vash realize that didn't matter.
Or, Vash is subjected to the mortifying ordeal of being known.

Summary
When she pulled back, concerns about Wolfwood’s health satisfied, it was Vash who spoke up next. “What happened to your earring?”
“What?”
“Your earring.” He gestured vaguely at the side of her head. “When did that happen? I thought you were hiding during the shootout.”
Meryl's earring breaks after a gun-filled conflict with some men at the bar. She's more upset about this than she feels she should be, but Vash and Wolfwood take it upon themselves to help cheer her up.

Summary
She grabbed the one closest to her first, a mystery novel that seemed to hold a promising twist at the end. But when she made her way to the other end of the store to grab that second book she wanted, she was surprised to see Wolfwood there, holding it.
“Wait, do you like romance novels?” she asked in surprise.
“What’s it to ya? A guy can’t enjoy romance?” Despite the nonchalance of his words, Meryl could see a little red flush creeping up the back of his neck and could hear some defensiveness sneaking into his tone.
“No, no, it’s not that.” She held up her hand not holding a book reassuringly. “I was just going to buy that exact one!”
She saw some of the tense set to his shoulders lessen. “Yeah?”
A small, run-down town in the middle of nowhere has a bookstore. To everyone’s surprise, Meryl and Wolfwood find some things in common there.
