Summary
It had been five days since Shen Jiu had gotten a proper night of sleep. Some noble had struck a good business deal; to celebrate, he’d rented out the entire Warm Red Pavilion for him and his colleagues. Each night that week, the brothel madam had turned Shen Jiu away with a regretful expression.
“Is there really no one available, Liang-ayi?"
“Well…”
Shen Jiu stiffened at her tone, giving her a suspicious look. “Anyone female?”
Madam Liang huffed, scowling at him. “Jiu-er, I know you’re hesitant about him, but you should give Yuan-er a chance.”
“No.” Shen Jiu crossed his arms, looking away. This wasn’t the first time they’d had this conversation about the Warm Red Pavilion’s singular male courtesan.
“He’s such a sweet boy! I really think the two of you would get along well,” she insisted, reaching up to cup Shen Jiu’s cheek. “You look so tired. Will it really hurt to try? Master Zhao and his friends have no interest in him, so Yuan-er’s been stuck alone in his room this whole time. I think it will do you both some good to keep each other company.”
Shen Jiu sighed. Maybe she was right. It couldn’t hurt to try.
Maybe he'd even make a friend... or something more.
