Some strange twist of the Wheel, or just deeply buried instincts, draws Lan to Moiraine as she wakes from a nightmare alone. They haven't spoken, haven't spent a second alone together since her return, haven't even daydreamed about confronting all of the shit between them, but it doesn't matter. All that matters is that Moiraine is there, right in front of him, hurting, and he cannot do nothing while she's in pain.
'Whatever was left of their bond, whatever was left of him after the severing of that bond, it did not let him think. It did not let him consider that they hadn’t been alone together once since she’d returned. That the only words they’d shared had been about the war, or the Dragon, or anything that wasn’t the gaping hole that now lived between them.
She was in pain, she needed him, and he was there. That was all there was to the matter. The rain did not make a choice to fall. Fire did not make a choice to burn. He did not make a choice to protect Moiraine. He simply did.'
