Max sighed, his lips twitching upward in mild amusement despite the tension. “I wasn’t the one who wanted to come, and why does it matter to you if they were filthy rich or dirt poor?” he said, “They are trash anyway” he muttered under his breath. “Besides For this Christmas I wanted to travel somewhere warm and stress-free before you give birth.”

“So, Charles,” Max began, finally looking up with a measured glance. “Tell me about yourself.”
The words should’ve come easily. They should’ve flowed right out of him, just like they had in the practice interviews. But instead, he felt like his throat had closed up. He tried to ignore the butterflies that felt more like an entire colony fluttering in his stomach. “I have a degree in journalism and communication,” he began, his voice shaking just a little. “I’ve been looking for a role where I can apply my skills, you know, something that works.”
Max raised an eyebrow, clearly not impressed. Charles cursed internally, mentally kicking himself for sounding so awkward. He tried to gather his thoughts, but the harder he tried to focus, the more the words slipped away.
