    Summary

“Do you even have a name?” She muttered, grimacing when it made a grumbling sound in response. Cressida considered the animal, mouth tightening with distaste. “You look like Daphne Bridgerton. With those big stupid eyes.”

“Bah.” The sheep replied, its tongue sticking out slightly with the noise.

Cressida snorted. “Of course, Your Grace,” She mimed curtseying as she sat on the hay, “Cressida Cowper, goddamn sheep herder, at your service.”

In exile from Mayfair, Cressida Cowper somehow landed herself working as a farmhand on her Aunt Joanna's sheep farm. Eloise Bridgerton finds her there two years later.

    Summary

Cressida Cowper was not a nice lady. She was not kind or quiet or demure, the way a lady ought to be. She didn't shine. She didn't curtsey deep enough. Her styles were too noisy. Her sleeves too big. And she was downright cruel.

These are some of the reasons she'd been given for why fewer and fewer men asked for a spot on her dance card each season. Which was fine with her, perhaps if she held out for another couple of years her parents would forget about her entirely and she could transition to spinsterhood in peace.

She had been fine being mean. She was good at it. It was one of the few things she was good at. As she aged, her demeanor got harsher and her sleeves got bigger and her prospects slimmed.

And then she'd been reintroduced to Eloise Bridgerton at a summer house party and it had all gone to shit. Because now she had ideas about women and competition and being nice and apologizing and caring and living authentically.

“You need not be an expert in great auks to win him over," Eloise assures her, righting Colin's coat across her shoulders, hilariously oversized. “You just need to distract.”

Eloise attempts to teach Cressida about flightless birds before her next meeting with Lord Debling. Cressida distracts.

Not for the first time, it occurs to Alyssa that going to Mass feels a lot like hooking up with those guys she dated before she found Emma -- something that works for some people, so she's told, but definitely not for her.
