Bilbo Baggins was not a particularly talented Guide. He knew that. His family knew that. Every last Hobbit in the four Farthings and Bree knew that.
But that meant nothing when one morning an agony that wasn’t Bilbo’s ripped right through him, dropping him to his knees with a scream. Wrapped up in the pain there was a presence. Someone fierce and determined, nestling himself in the blank space in Bilbo’s mind for the barest of moments before he slipped away. It was like fingertips brushing across the outside fringe of his soul, and Bilbo wanted it back. Wanted him back.

His name is apparently Frerin and Bilbo is fairly certain no one else can see him. Also he might be a ghost, as much as it pains Bilbo to acknowledge that ghosts are apparently real.

The thing about ghosts is that there aren’t many, especially in the shire. You have to be really really stubborn to avoid the afterlife or there would be ghost just about every where. Naturally you’re unlikely to find anyone more stubborn than the line of durin.

Beware of spoilers:
Ahhhhhhhh. I binge read this during dead week which was a bad decision but this fic was so good I couldn't stop. Bilbo's relationships with everyone are so well fleshed out i absolutely adore it. Fili and kili with the hair braiding and Frerin teaching bilbo how to do it and bilbo putting Frerin's braids in Fili's hair are just so good it make me want to cry. The boys having personalities and aspersions and actually being young adult instead of being treat like preteens scratches an itch that should not be so hard to scratch is so fantastic. Bilbo training Kili to be a word Smith, politician, and peacekeepers is so excellent and fits both of them so well.
Everything with Frerin is beyond words level of wonderful and I cannot wait for the day Bilbo can give him a hug and do his hair for him. I need it so bad.
