“What is this?” Aventurine has to stop himself from outright glaring at Jade. She smiles thinly at him. “Now, now, no need to be so upset. We were as surprised as you are now when we first got him.”
Aventurine turns his head back to look at the boy through the one-way mirror. He estimates the boy to be no older than eight, but with how malnourished he seems he could be older. “And he just turned up at the IPC’s doorstep?” he asks. Jade looks uncertainly at Aventurine for a moment. “Not per se…”
Jade clears her throat. “His father approached an IPC worker and handed him over.” Aventurine raises his eyebrow questioningly. “Okay, then where's the father?” Jade looks him directly in the eye. “He killed himself.” For a moment, Aventurine holds eye contact before breaking away to look at the boy.
“How can you be so sure the boy's an Avgin?”

Aventurine and Veritas are forced to adopt an Avgin kid by the IPC and accidentally get attached

Ratio’s given name curled beautifully around Aventurine’s tongue and, although he said it with lack of practice or surety, Ratio was sure he would never tire of hearing it fall from those lips.
“Yes, gambler?”
Said gambler chuckled softly, and rolled his eyes slightly at the nickname.
“I was wondering if I could stay over at yours tonight…”

Aventurine stays over at Ratio's and tells him about his past. Aventurine asks the doctor to help him get rid of all his awful memories, but his suggested method leaves Ratio so, so horrified at the implications, and even more concerned with the shadows that still plague the gambler's life.

After the events of Penacony, Aventurine has been laying low, steering clear of the rest of the IPC when he can. However, some pesky side effects still remain from Sunday's usage of the power of Xipe, the Harmony, in his attempt to force him to submit to the Family's will. One day, Dr. Ratio finds the gambler dealing with some of this trouble alone.
Or, how Aventurine tripped and fell into yearning for Veritas Ratio. Literally.

But no, it is the audience, those who bet on the “good looking piece of meat” happy that their investment paid off. He is sick, sick from what he’s done, sick from the way they cheer for him, sick from the way they scream “Signonian” instead of his name.
He does not vomit. He does not shout at them. He does not ask them how they can watch such callousness with smiles on their faces.
Instead, he whispers to himself, “All or nothing,” and takes a bow.

Summary
They knew that removing Aventurine's body from the dreampool would probably have consequences. It was a worst-case scenario they planned for to the best of their abilities. Now, trapped in the Primordial Dreamscape, Aventurine lives impossible lives, completely unaware of the outside world. He might be a prince, or a barista, or a gentleman, but each alternate universe offers him a chance to accept support and care from a man named Veritas Ratio. Some opportunities are better than others.
In the waking world, on the Astral Express, the real Ratio would be happy with just one chance, in this universe. But Aventurine has to wake up first, which means finding a way to guide him back.
