If you asked anyone from class 1-A when they stopped being afraid of Hikitsuga Katsuki, most of them would wonder why anyone would be scared of him, a few would understand how others could find him scary, and a few would tell you it was after the USJ incident. It wasn't because he wasn't scary at times, but because every single one of them saw through his shield or anger and saw the person underneath. While most of them didn't know his history, they knew his actions spoke louder than words.
Their class has had an empty seat since day 1, after Aizawa-sensei had made good on his threat to expel the person who got lowest on the tests he gave them, but after the Sports Festival, the kid from General Studies was going to join them. Up until then, they hadn't really thought about how outsiders really saw Hikitsuga. Afterwards would be a bit eye opening.
