There were several gasps of shock, which Harry didn't quite understand the reason for at the time, and Professor McGonagall, who had placed the hat on his head, had looked at him with pity when she removed it. A look Harry was well-versed in receiving and understanding at this point in his life. It disappeared as quickly as it came, however, and a tumultuous round of applause exploded from the table of students clad in green and silver amongst the black of their robes. He went to join them, and was coaxed down into a seat by Pansy Parkinson, who had been sorted just before him and was patting an empty section of bench beside her. Across from Pansy was Draco Malfoy, who was smiling at Harry like all his Christmases had come at once. "
