Essek goes home, and there is no one waiting at his door. This should be some manner of relief. But his towers haven't felt like a safe haven for a long time now, long before errant scourgers appeared to harass him with strange questions. He misses the immediacy of that threat, prefers it over the slow and indulgent terror of whatever punishment is coming for him, someday soon.
He tells himself that he misses only that, the simplicity of being unsafe in the company of predators, and that he does not miss the company itself.

Summary
There's always been something strange about the farmer boy, and everyone in town knows it. No one can quite put their finger on it. It might be the way he slurs his words, or the drag in his steps, or the sharp hunger in his eyes. No one really cares, either. The farmer may be strange, but he's not so bad. There's an awful lot of strange in the Valley, after all. No sense in trying to explain the unexplainable.
But Abby's never had enough sense in her head for her own good, and Sebastian's never had any sense when it comes to Abby.
