She wanted to be a painter. And a painter she was going to be.
And so, at 12 years old, she renounced her name and fled with a purse of coins and a dream and knocked on the door of the most famous female portraitist of the city.

As she washes the rice, Kō looks at her left hand fondly. On her fourth finger glints a beautiful silver ring, its center adorned with the most gorgeous emerald she has ever seen. The stone has been deemed impure by the sales lady, Keiko had told her, due to the little streaks of blue inside, but to Ko, that ring was perfect. It’s surrounded by four little aquamarine drops.
It’s a world on her finger.
Keiko’s own ring is golden, etched with five stars entwined with exquisite orange diamond drops.
She has a star on her finger, always.
And today, these rings have been adorning them for 45 years.

If anything, this isn’t how Bokuto Keiko had envisioned their honeymoon to go.
When they booked the plane tickets, the hotel, all the activities, both her wife Kō and herself had pictured the utmost perfection. They had done everything in their power to prolongate the magic of their wedding, to the point where even Keiko, the overthinker, had thought nothing could go wrong.

A feeling, and the way their eyes darkened when they reached for the ball, and the way people went missing after any altercations with their first years. All of that, and the fact that one by one, his fellow first years were becoming just like them.
