    Summary

Both of them may be woefully lacking in experience of such matters, and have only the sketchiest theoretical knowledge of how to execute the act beyond the basic mechanics, but Javert has handled enough poorly-manufactured pistols in his time – whether seized from arrestees or, more depressingly, issued to the police – to appreciate the value of assistance in easing things along when jamming barely-fitting articles down narrow passages.

    Summary

“Must you look at me so?” Javert snapped, tugging the blanket back up, “I feel like a specimen in the museum.”

“Forgive me,” Valjean stood abruptly, before he could allow his rising irritation to spill from him, “I shall leave you to ready for the day.”

Javert leaves the house on an argument and makes his apologies in a way Valjean would never expect from him.

    Summary

He is not wet. That is his first realization upon waking. His throat is raw and his muscles ache. When he sits, a headache washes over him and fatigue reigns. The room is dark, though a faint light shines through an open door opposite him. It’s merely cracked and the orange light flickers and dances, promising fire.

There are only two possibilities through that door: Hell or Jean Valjean; Javert isn’t certain there’s a difference.

    Summary

He did not know how to proceed. He was an unmoored raft, bobbing in the middle of the vast ocean. All his life he had anchored himself with the guidance of authority. As a boy, it was the criminal code. As a man, his direct superiors. After his fall, it was God.

What authority now, to dictate the actions of his poor old heart?

    -

Post-Seine. Javert, hopelessly confused by his newfound feelings towards Jean Valjean, chose to heed a piece of advice from the papers and decided to keep some distance. But when Valjean disappeared, he realised his actions might have had consequences he'd never intended, or dreamt of.

    Summary

Valjean's gaze was still on him, warm, tender, heated; there was not a shade of doubt in it, and again Javert could do nothing but bow to this gift, accept it with trembling hands and a gratitude that could and should be expressed by passion only.
