Summary

"Aren't you going to braid it back?" Paimon asks, peering over from where she was seated on his shoulder. Aether glances up at her curious gaze.
"I can't," he says. Paimon looks befuddled, and maybe a little concerned. But even Aether can't grasp his hesitation, much less its root or implications.
"I'll just keep it in a ponytail for now," he tells her, as if he had a choice. Paimon hums, and gets him a tiny sprig of sweet flowers to tuck into the shorter locks on his head. Aether humors her.
When they finally leave the river, Aether has to try his hardest not to think about the last thing he had left of his sister, tangled by little branches and unwound by his own hands. He tries not to think of the grime he had washed away, like he was cleansing himself of her existence.
He tries not to think about honeyed eyes just like his and blonde hair a shade brighter than his own, somewhere out there. Just not here.
