Summary
“Why were you at my school?”
“It was Parent-Teacher night,” Buck explains but Chris still looks confused.
Eddie’s carrying in the bowls when Christopher asks so wholeheartedly, “Are you my parent?”
Buck coughs and, when he can’t conceal it, Eddie answers instead.
“Yeah, Chris. He kind of is.”
Buck shouldn’t be surprised by the remark, but he is. He knows how involved he is in Christopher’s life, but the fear of overstepping and being too much has always lurked in the back of his mind. To hear Eddie say it. To see Chris’ smile. It’s a lot.
“Can I call you ‘Dad’ then?”
For the second time that evening, Buck’s crying.
