    Natasha presses her hand over her heart, and – Tony has heard rumors, that her skin is blank, or that she killed her other half, but he doesn’t believe them. “They deserve to know, don’t you think?”

    He looks at the sleeping supersoldiers in his hospital room, thinks of going to bed safe and surrounded and waking up when it’s already light out, when the first pot of coffee is already cold, waking up to Steve’s bedhead and the body-warmed metal of Bucky’s prosthetic hand, waking up whole.

    “They’ve been together for ninety years, Nat,” he says. “They’re practically married. There’s no room for me.”

    Steve knocks on his door.

    Tony lifts his head from his tablet. “What?” he snaps.

    “I just… I came to see how you were doing,” Steve says, voice barely above a whisper.

    Tony’s arm curves in a wide arc. “As you can see, I’m doing great,” he says, dryly.

    “I shouldn’t… I don’t know if anyone told you, but we went to that garden that Nebula told us about–”

    “–and you killed Thanos,” Tony finishes for him. “Yes, Rhodey told me.”

    Steve’s shoulders slump. “Oh,” he murmurs.

    “Yeah…” Tony drawls.

    “How are you, how are you feeling?” Steve asks, braving a step forward beyond the threshold of the room.

    “Oh, well, you know me, if I have some trashy magazines at my disposal, I’m all ears.” Tony pauses. “Why are you here, Cap?”

    “I don’t like this,” Steve mutters to him, as he shifts awkwardly on his feet in the lounge of Tony Stark’s absurdly large Malibu mansion.

    Bucky sighs and resists the urge to roll his eyes. This isn’t the first time (and it certainly won’t be the last) that Steve has expressed that very sentiment, and while Bucky also recognises the futility and drawbacks to this particular job, it’s a job, it’s their job and it puts money in their bank account, which is something that Bucky won’t turn his back on.

    “I just don’t understand why someone like Tony Stark needs a bodyguard,” Steve complains, quietly. “Some spoilt little rich boy, so full of himself that he thinks the whole world is out to get him?”

    “Shut up, or you’re going to get us fired,” Bucky hisses.

    Steve shakes his head. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want to have to spend the foreseeable future looking after some dolled-up, greedy prep school reject.”

     

     

    Or, alternatively, five times that Tony Stark surprised Steve and Bucky, and one time they didn’t really care.

    Tony feels the familiar burn of a flower mark being etched into his skin but he doesn’t look, doesn’t try and check to see what it is. Instead he keeps his eyes on Howard and his hands cupped around his bleeding mouth and nose.
