Moonlight glints off of the twin tear tracks drawn down her cheeks. (Sarah always cried when she was sick.) Ellie scrubs at her eyes, more aggressively than she needed to. (Ellie never cries in front of him. Or she tries not to, at least.)
“Let’s get you back up the hill, okay?”
She starts to shake her head, but she squeezes her eyes shut at the movement.
“I’m so dizzy. I can’t— ‘m gonna fall.”
He helps her up, holds her forearms gently. Her jacket crinkles.
“You ain’t gonna fall. I got you.”

Summary
She remembers the time she found a baby bird back in Boston, holding its fragile body in her palms after rescuing it from the dormitory roof. It was a tiny thing, delicate, all hollow bones and downy brown feathers. The realization that the fragile life in her hands could be so easily crushed had been almost overwhelming.
Joel holds onto her a little like she had that bird: careful, cautious. Like she’s broken a wing and he’ll keep her safe until she’s ready to fly on her own again.
