Vax had never felt the kind of belonging he'd felt here, like there was a community of people who actually gave a damn about each other for the first time in his life. The Shademaster would march on them any day now and cut them down like so many mad dogs. And Thorn would not walk away, not while his people were in danger.
Vax kissed him harder, as if he could convey all of the things he could not say, the things Thorn would not let himself believe if Vax could say them. I know what it is not to belong. To put everything on the line for the people you love and know that, gods willing, you will not walk away. I cannot begrudge you that. But I wish it were not true.
