Summary
Will was stupid for thinking Hawkins would wait for him, for thinking that the little slice he carved out for himself within the Party would remain immutable. Will was stupid for hoping that despite the lack of calls and letters, he and Mike were still best friends.
After Mike's visit, Will saw it all clearly. Mike was no longer his best friend, or friend at all. Their friendship had been forged by proximity, and now the only thing still tying them together was… El.
Will would not be stupid any longer. He was going to make some changes, and fast. Lenora Hills could be good for him—he could be someone else.

TLDR: Timeline divergence where none of of the events of ST4 occur besides Mike Wheeler landing at the airport and ignoring Will. Will retaliates by integrating into Lenora Hills High and dating a girl from his history class. But, when Mike comes back for the first week of summer vacation, a party trick gone awry leads to some serious revelations.

I see the panic in the room, but nothing feels real. I watch as Jasper grabs Maya by the wrist and runs while Miller sprints to the painting. But it’s like life is happening in slow motion.
I can feel my heart beating in my throat, but I just stand there, like a deer in headlights. I can feel the useless adrenaline rushing through my veins, but there is nothing I can do. I am frozen. Oh my god. We are going to be caught.
