Summary
In the summer of 1983, Robin Buckley gets a job at the Hawk, hoping to earn some spare cash and get a little space from her frazzled, overly critical mother. She doesn't expect to find a friend in Jonathan Byers, her awkward, near-silent coworker. Overburdened with responsibilities and used to solitude, Jonathan doesn't think he needs a friend at all. One eventful summer, though, will prove them wrong.

Summary
She moves to her right, eyes trained on the next target, and thinks about Mr. Salinger’s class on sensations in the human body. Pain, he’d said, originated as a defense mechanism. When an external stimulus was actively harming your cells, hampering their function or killing them entirely, pain alerted your brain that something had to be done about that. Accordingly, you’d draw your hand back from the iron or jump back after stepping on glass. Pain was on your side. It was useful. It helped you by hurting you. To be immune to pain was to render pain useless – shoot the messenger, run out of ammunition for the enemy.

Nancy Wheeler learns that to heal, you have to hurt.

Summary
Steve was never someone they used to pay much attention to before. Mike bitched about him endlessly when he was dating Nancy (though he’d been the one to breathlessly relate the tale of Steve and the Nail Bat and the Demogorgon to them, so). They’d viewed him with the benign disinterest Lucas thinks most kids would view their friend’s big sister’s jock boyfriend, mostly, but then Lucas had been in that junkyard with him and Dustin and Max and the demodogs and then he’d been with them at the Byers, with Billy, and Steve had put himself between Lucas and Billy without a second’s hesitation. Then he’d protected them again in the tunnels, and Lucas had maybe thought, Wow.
Lucas, at the basketball court on two Saturday afternoons, four months apart.
