Ratio presses one of the buttons, and the screen lights up. The numbers on it flash for a moment before settling at 0.200.

“In this area alone, the concentration of ambient memoria is 200 millisomni per square inch. Not enough to induce hallucinations, but we may have some interesting dreams while we’re here. And the citizens of Vara-II have been having such dreams likely their entire lives. The effects of nuclear radiation on memoria have not been studied, so I can’t say for sure what effects this has had on their societal development. But I doubt it’s helped them keep a level head.”

(During a negotiation on a planet with a history of IPC-enabled nuclear warfare, Aventurine and Ratio get stuck alone in an old fallout shelter-turned-museum after a bomb drops, with Aventurine severely injured. They"ve got the supplies to last until an IPC rescue ship can arrive, but the planet"s already-unstable memoria has been stirred up, and they"re periodically forced to relive the memories of the shelter"s original inhabitants. And things didn"t go well for the shelter"s original inhabitants.)

    Summary

Apocalypse: Star Rail might be the worst game Dr. Veritas Ratio has ever played. In what world is murdering half the known universe for no reason even remotely reasonable? What kind of game kills off its most compelling characters just for shock value?

Also, why is he now in the game — and as a damn NPC, out of all things?

【 Activation Code: “Moronic developers, moronic game.” It is our sincere wish that during your time, you can fulfill your desires and, in accordance with your wish, transform a piece of moronic work into a magnificent, high-quality, first-rate classic. Bound Role: Unnamed male NPC of the Veritas Prime star system, age 0. 】

【 Congratulations! Welcome to Apocalypse: Star Rail, version ██! 】

Well. If these idiot developers can’t take constructive criticism, Veritas might as well construct the criticism himself… by forcibly inserting himself into a plot where he’s never existed.

    Summary

"What"s the game, then, Doctor? What do I need to do to get out of here?"
"I"m afraid I"m not actually on your side. As a member of the Intelligentsia Guild, you"ve made yourself my enemy with what you did on Egyhazo."
The prisoner"s eyes sparkle with sudden enthusiasm. "Did you believe it?"
    "Believe what?"
    "My ruse."
    "Of course not," Veritas scoffs.

In the aftermath of the Intelligentsia Guild and IPC"s fumble in Egyhazo, a new Stoneheart rises to prominence. Veritas hesitates to believe that this "Aventurine" intends to make good on his promise of "mutually beneficial collaboration."

    Summary

“Ah,” Aventurine said, rubbing his arm, “so that’s why they had us refresh all our vaccinations before this trip. We’re not in any danger of falling ill, are we? I’d hate to ruin such a nice vacation.”

“It’s unclear,” Ratio said. Aventurine side-eyed him, looking less relaxed now. But if those folktales had any merit to them at all, “more likely, no.”

They were approaching the town now, inclined turquoise shingles peeking out over the edges of the treeline. It seemed like every building here was overgrown with flowers—flowers burst from the vines on white stucco walls, bouquets hung from the bucket-laden stalls at every corner, and almost all the windows were decorated with boxes abundant with blooms.

“It’s beautiful, but,” he grimaced, voicing Ratio’s thoughts aloud, “a little morbid, isn’t it?”

To a scientist, mythology and fairy tales are simply veneers that warp and obscure the truth. And to a doctor, diseases are problems that can be solved with logic rather than love.
