While assisting him, the two get a chance to learn a little more about each other, and a friendship begins to bloom. Tech, realizing Echo's reluctance to trust, makes it his mission to get Echo to trust him; not only with his physical pain, but with all pain that ails him.

Echo looked deathly ill.
Hunter wasn’t overly worried, though. After all, he supposed that that was just kind of Echo’s thing. What, with the pale, ashen skin, sunken face and frame, blue-tinted lips, tired, dead eyes, and missing limbs, Hunter had seen corpses that looked less dead than Echo.
But, of course, Hunter had no intentions or desires of telling the man this. Echo was still new to the team—the last thing Hunter wanted was to alienate or smother him. He didn’t want to offer or force help where it wasn’t desired, yet. Echo needed space and time to come to terms with his new reality—in body and in station. He would reach out and open up when he was ready. Hunter was sure of it.
Tech and Crosshair, as it turned out, had no such reservations.
