Your desire to help others stemmed from your youth; You were always patching your baby brother's scraped knees and elbows from running too fast down the hill in your back yard, always making sure to thumb Vaseline across the back of his neck when he was congested. You were a caretaker. You acted as the mother you both didn't have. She had trouble with shimmer, you did your best to help her as her head slumped over the table muttering incoherently at her own embarrassment, you helped clean her spit from her lips and bring her to bed. She was just never quite a mother.
She left without a trace the night your brother fell to illness, only a faded glittering violet stain left smeared across her vanity. Shimmer took her, you decided. You grew to loathe her, how could she? How dare she? You were left with nothing. Only the clothes on your back.
