Silver’s question drew her out of her thoughts, and she turned to him with a furrowed brow. “What?”
The hedgehog pointed to the TV, where the current song title was listed. The 12 Days of Christmas.
“This person is giving the other a lot of birds. Why would someone need all those birds?”
“They could eat ‘em,” Eclipse said with a shrug. “Maybe they like poultry. Like, a lot.”
Silver landed, placing his hands on his hips. “Why do you always think about eating things?”
Eclipse shrugged again. “What else are you gonna do with all those birds?”

His voice was low and tight. If Callie didn’t know better, she’d swear he was afraid.
“It’s tradition.” She used a wet towel to clean the rind. “We carve faces into pumpkins around Halloween for a fun decoration.”
“Why?”
She shrugged. “A long time ago people believed they helped ward off evil spirits.”
The pinched look on his face intensified. The quick glances around him increased. “There are evil spirits near?”
Her brow furrowed. “Not that I’m aware of. It’s just an old superstition. What’s wrong?”
Knuckles pulled himself up to stand tall, rolling his shoulders back as he pushed out his chest. “I must do a patrol. To search for these evil spirits.”

Summary
Callie uttered a frustrated grunt. She hated when he did this. Whenever he was mad at her, he went to ground. She normally didn’t mind when he dug—he was an echidna, after all, and that’s what they do.
But this time it wasn’t for enrichment or entertainment. He was doing it to piss her off.
And it was working.
“Damnit, echidna,” she muttered, fast-walking to the hole he’d just disappeared down. She went to her knees, and peered down into the crater. “Knuckles MacPherson! You get out of there, right now!”
“NO!” The refusal was muffled, the dirt absorbing his deep baritone. “You come in here and face me!”

"Tell me who you are." He stepped closer, his hands curling into fists. "I demand to know who you are and why you are here."
"We're your parents, Knuckles," the female said, and that stiff smile appeared on her lips. "We should have been here with you all along. We've missed you."

“I should’ve just kept my mouth shut,” Tails said softly.
Knuckles whirled on him so fast, Tails flinched.
“You are not at fault!”

Summary
Tails looked up at his security monitors and saw Little Knux peeking out of the attic hatch. The tiny echidna lingered for a moment. The automatic night lights caught his movement and flicked on. With the hall illuminated, Little Knux headed down the stairs.
After a swig of coffee, Tails went back to his coding.
A moment later another alarm beeped at him. That was for the front door. Little Knux was peering outside with the same trepidation as when he’d peered out of the attic hatch. The security light over the door flicked on and he marched right out.
In a moment Tails was out of his chair and snatching a weapon off the wall.

Summary
“Where am I?” The strange little creature croaked.
“Oh my God, I knew it!” Tom gasped. "It's an alien!"
The alien blinked hard and opened his eyes wide once more.
There was an explosion and suddenly Maddie was flat on her ass. The alien shot past her like a bullet. He hit the ground and skidded across the floor before he lost his balance. He threw out his arms to catch himself, except he only had the one now. He yelped as he toppled over and fell right onto its injured arm.
They all gasped. Before Maddie could think of how much that would hurt, the alien shrieked.

Summary
Apparently the thing that had taken control of Knuckles was supposed to be some kind of evil demi-god who the echidnas occasionally whipped out like a superweapon to save their butts. Why they hadn’t called on it when they were nearly extinct was unclear. They hadn’t summoned the Enerjak since they lost the Master Emerald. Which was especially weird considering:
The Enerjak was drawn to powerful things like moths to bright lights. It knew where the Master Emerald was and it was coming for it. But like… kind of slowly. It didn't have a ton of purpose, this Enerjak. It got sidetracked destroying things and crushing G.U.N.’s tanks like empty soda cans. Which might have been almost cool if it wasn't… y’know, wearing his brother like its personal skin suit.

Knuckles gave a jerky nod as if he knew what she was talking about. Or why she was telling him this.
“I’ve tried some repairs myself but it’s a lot of work and it’s only Cream and me, you see.” He did not see. He nodded like he did, because he did not want to upset the well-dressed lady with the little daughter. “You said you were looking for work?”
Oh. He realized suddenly: she was asking if he would work for her.
