   Summary

   After the Queen's death, the new king enacts a law forcing unmarried women to be sold at auction and bear heirs within two years. Colin returns to bid for Penelope, while Phillip bids for Eloise instead. Penelope, still hurt by Colin's past remarks, resists marrying him. Eloise, fearing her own future, dreads her match. To keep the two friends together, Colin and Phillip agree they should all live together at Romney Hall.
