Rooster grinned at the startled shout from Phoenix, knowing that she was probably cursing not taking Maverick up on his offer to try to be his RIO for this exercise. It seemed like such an easy training exercise to win: six jets flown by pilots and WSOs who had been training together for weeks against two jets with RIOs who weren’t trained to be RIOs and two officers who hadn’t flown a real dogfight in years. It should’ve been an easy run. Three jets on Mav’s tail, three on Ice, and they should both be down before they could even line up their first shot.
