You had known that you were no longer like them the second you had left the remnants of New Nazareth behind.
You stumble out of the campus, not sure whether to walk on four legs or two, to pretend to still be human or to embrace the monster you have become. Nick runs a hand over one of your wings and you flinch so hard he steps back. Blood covers both of you. Nick still has a scrap of fabric tied around his face, hiding the Flood that has ruined it. The Flood that you drew on.
You pick your way through the wreckage, the two of you silhouetted in evening light like the end of an era. You make your way outside the gates and watch the red banners they had pinned to their crosses break free and flutter in the wind.
It’s over.
It’s finally over.
And yet, you can’t quite bring yourself to have the happy ending everyone else wants.
