Mice were common creatures inside the homes of District Nine. A constant reminder of their failure during the rebellion. Originally released by their oppressors as a form of biological weapons, it wasnโt uncommon to see their descendantโs scurrying the dirt streets.
When the Capitol learned of them being easily slayed during the war, they modified the failed jabberjays to attack anyone who harmed the disease carriers. A trait that the Mockingjay sadly kept.
To this day the people of Nine canโt go near a mouse without the birds attacking. As after allโฆ what was a Mockingjay without a Mouse by their side?

First, it had been Juniper and Dylan. Those in District 7 stood with their mouths gaped open in shock as they watched the two teenagers get reaped for the 66th Hunger Games. Out of fear and denial, they tried to chalk it up to chance. After all, there was no way those kids had been picked.But when Cynthia and Jasper were reaped the following year the people could no longer deny it. This had nothing to do with chance. It was all by design. They were being chosen for a very specific purposeโto send a message to the district.
By the time Willow and Finley had been reaped, everyone had come to expect it. The only consolation was that most families didnโt have to worry about their children getting sent to their deaths. They werenโt on what had been deemed the list.
And so, by the time the 69th Hunger Games came around, Halle Croft knew she was next.
