Tonight, Brucie Wayne is the one who holds a glass of champagne, laughing airily at something or other; Batman, the endlessly vigilant protector, is the one who notices.
Bruce is the one who drops everything and heads to Jason’s side.
It’s the look on Jason’s face, eyes afraid and stricken; it’s the fact that his shoulders have crept up to his ears like he’s waiting to be hit; it’s the sight of white-knuckled, clenched fists, and the knowledge that Jason is digging nails into his skin the way he does to ground himself.
Bruce steps between him and the man who’s hurt his son.
Jason recognizes a man at a gala and knows: this is the moment it all falls apart.
Bruce is there to pick up the pieces.
