After Mikey fails to open a portal to save Leo, Donnie, overwhelmed with grief and despair flees stanten island
while running away he stumbles across Leo's sword.
Due to Leo's hopelessness and Donnie's despair the sword reacts to their ninpo creating a telepathic link to each other.
