“I’m quite sure. Also, ghosts do not have lungs, Charles. It would be quite a feat for me to ‘hack one up’.”
“Well, looks like you hacked something up,” Charles mumbled, picking up the small white object on the floor. As he raised it to his eyes, he saw that it was a flower petal, speckled with tiny dots of red. Fuck.

Summary
As soon as the hellhound is dead, Charles collapses down and in. Part of Edwin expected it, so he is able to catch his soul before he hits the ground.
“Jesus, is he okay?” asks Crystal, staring at the brightly glowing orb in Edwin’s hands.
“He's just tired. He'll be right as rain in a day or two,” Edwin assures her, but his mouth curls down of its own volition. Charles never likes the vulnerability that comes with this form, and he’s always in a bit of a mood afterwards. Besides, Edwin always misses him dearly when he’s gone.
He runs a thumb over the surface of the orb. “For now, it's our turn to protect him.”

"Well, I'm not asking you," says the demon, sharply. "Am I? You're mine."
And Charles, who's fighting with all he's worth to move even a centimeter, says, "Hang on. He's not yours, though, is he?"
