Summary
Meredith and Nick, two orphans living in a group home, have known each other forever. They were always inseparable, not even the four year age gap between them could tear that friendship apart. But something did, something bigger than them. When Meredith is eleven, she gets adopted by a nice family and he convinces her to go enjoy her new life. Under one condition: they will be allowed to see each other once a year on Christmas day. And for the first few years it works, even though they are inevitably growing apart since she’s now the daughter of a wealthy doctor and he doesn’t even know what he’ll do after he turns eighteen. One day they have a big fight over this and Nick stops showing up on Christmas day. Little by little Meredith learns to live without him. But she doesn’t know that this was just the beginning of their story… Years later her world is turned upside down again, and the December she now faces will change her life forever once again.

She can’t but smile as she steps back, her eyes fixed on them and the tree lighting them up from behind. Matching smiles on their faces and obvious happiness despite everything they’d survived. She feels a familar pull towards her purse, her camera all but calling out to her, and she sinks her teeth into her lower lip.
“Wait there one second,” she says, digging through her purse where she’d dumped it on the couch, “I’ve got to get a picture of this.”
