A cigarette dangled from his lips, its ember a defiant star against the encroaching night. He seemed an apparition of apathy, his wounds mere afterthoughts.
"Hello?" Rosaline’s voice was a tentative whisper, betraying her trepidation as she edged closer. "Mister, do you hear me?" She needed to know he was more than a specter, that the pulse of life still coursed through him.
The man lifted his head, and his pale blue eyes focused on hers through the darkness. He didn’t say anything, but his nod showed that he was aware.
