    Xie Lian stared at the child sitting across the table from him. His chopsticks were paused midair, the meal he’d cooked forgotten as his mouth hung open in disbelief.

    He knew this was a Hua Cheng he had yet to meet. One who didn’t view him as a savior. A god. A companion. His eye lacked its usual shine, the glint of admiration that twinkled at the edges any time he looked at Xie Lian. As if he was something marvelous to behold. Instead, his expression was guarded, his eye dark and distrustful.

    “Hong Hong-er?”

    The child startled, his eye squinting into a glare.

    “Who are you?” Hong-er asked, his voice coming out a snarl, refusing to waver despite his uneasy appearance. “How do you know my name?”

    Or: When Hua Cheng is turned back into a child, Xie Lian promises to take care of him. Though, he never expected that Hong-er would be such a temperamental child. Xie Lian loves him regardless but can"t help but ask himself, is he up to the task?
