After several more minutes of verbal sparring, Naruto was finally ready to unveil the gift. He paused for dramatic effect with his hands on the sheet, and then whipped it off with a triumphant “Ta-da!”
Everyone cheered and clapped–and then abruptly stopped as they recognized what the painting was illustrating. For a split second Tenzō wondered if it was, in fact, a character from icha-icha, considering that the subject was shirtless, but then realization hit him. Tenzō felt his stomach drop straight onto the floor, and his face heated up like a sudden blazing wildfire.

Hello! This series is inspired by "Splintered AU's" by Friendshipcastle!
The goal is to fill this series with weird, interesting kakayama AU oneshots.
AUs are an interesting type of writing; there is a deep challenge in keeping a character true to themselves in a totally different universe from their own.
I know do this better in some stories than others, but I hope that they are entertaining anyway!
There is no set goal for how many of these I want to write, but I will add them to this series for ease of navigation anyway. :D

Summary
Dense summer air trapped under an unbroken canopy of leafy branches. No rush, no obligations, and certainly no cell phone service. Though it’d been fourteen years since he had seen it last, Willow Oak was almost exactly as Kakashi remembered it, even down to the ice cream selection at the local gas station.
This week-long vacation was supposed to be just the break he needed to clear his head so that he could return home to New York prepared to handle the mounting problems in his life.
But he hadn’t considered for even a moment that Tenzō would still be in Willow Oak. Tenzō, with whom he’d spent the countless summers of his youth, racing through the woods, floating in lakes, and sharing secrets in the dark. Tenzō, who had done a lot of growing up in the intervening years, it turned out.
And now, after a week of rediscovering their friendship and uncovering something new and promising, Kakashi is realizing that Willow Oak has problems of its own, and no matter how long he stays, the ones he left behind in New York will be waiting for him when he returns.

Summary
For Tenzō, leaving behind his small-time animation job in Saskatchewan for a role with Delittry Feature Animations in sunny Southern California was a dream come true.
Or, at least, it should have been. But between the misleading job description, the mind-numbingly boring work, and the difficulty of finding an apartment he can afford, Tenzō is starting to wonder whether uprooting his life was the right decision.
So when the opportunity to freelance at White Fang, a small and independent studio, presents itself, Tenzō takes it. Even if it is a violation of his employment contract with Delittry. The risk is worth it for the chance to express himself creatively.
And with White Fang’s eccentric director, Kakashi at the helm, and his small team of rowdy creative-types, Tenzō is sure he’s in for quite the ride.

Yamato’s heart was racing. Kakashi was studying him with something like determination in his eyes.
“Do you think,” Kakashi started, and Yamato could see a flush creeping up past the top of his mask, “you might like to try kissing someone who isn’t a woman?”
Yamato felt like his brain was working in overdrive to process what was happening. He was sure he was misinterpreting the situation at hand. He had to be.
“Do you think you might like to try kissing me?” Kakashi clarified, the pink on his cheeks now spreading to the tips of his ears.

Coping mechanism. The phrase had been following Kakashi around for the last two days like a stray dog that couldn’t take a hint.
He hadn’t used a coping mechanism. He had just. Well. Tenzō had just...honestly, Kakashi didn’t know. He couldn’t deny that the role reversal he’d participated in with Tenzō had resolved his panic attack, but to call it a coping mechanism? That implied that it was something to be used strategically. Something repeatable. Something he should ‘stick with’ according to the Hokage. How would that even work? When he felt an episode coming on he would call on Tenzō to boss him around?
The implications of that caused that same worried twist in Kakashi’s stomach that he wasn’t ready to unpack at this point.
