    “It’s alright.” Ame’s experiences on other, possibly hostile planets taught her that politeness was always the way to go. “You’re not wrong.”

    “I sometimes am.” Her eyes were tree bark, blankets, old beat up couches. Ame thought of home when she looked into her eyes, and struggled not to cry.

    “Don’t cry,” the alien-mermaid-mind reader said. “I’m sorry, don’t cry.” She reached out, and for some reason Ame didn’t stop her.

    Her hand was warm against her cheek, brushing against the curve of her cheek bone like it was a motion she’d done a thousand times, a lover’s touch. Ame’s lips parted, heat condensed at her eyes until she was sure she was crying again. The stranger just wiped them away, smiled tenderly at her, smelled of apples and cinnamon even though she’d just come out of the ocean and Ame hadn’t had that combination of scents since they’d ran out of those food supplies a while ago. Even further back, she hadn’t had those scents since she was home.

    “It’s alright.” She said. “You’re alright.”

    Again, for some reason, Ame believed her.
