He’d only heard of them in old tales told around a fire in the dead of night when the orphans had nothing else to do with their time. The fictitious stories were initially created by parents in an attempt to keep their children from wandering alone at night, but the whispers bled into the groups of slum-dwelling kids.
None of them knew that those creatures from their stories were as real as the flame that kept them warm when the bitter cold tried to strip them of life.

Summary
William had yelled at Sherlock back then, and Sherlock had yelled back, a hopeless call– an emotional plea. Back then, William felt an almost sickening exhilaration while fighting Sherlock. It meant that Sherlock could look at William with distaste, if even for a minute, and maybe, just maybe William could shatter his profile of the crime lord and convince the detective to hate him just enough so William could die without too much of a fight.
He had treasured the poison that they’d spat and hissed at each other back then. He derived immense pleasure in the song of anger, one last battle cry before he plunged into the deepest, most unforgiving depths of the Thames. Back then, he needed to show Sherlock that he wasn’t worth saving.
But now, one year later, living together in New York City and in a committed relationship while simultaneously trying to atone for his past heinous sins, fighting felt a lot less satisfying.

“Fancy meeting you here~” Sherlock says casually, as if he’s not breath-taken, sidling up next to him. Careful not to step in the puddle of blood soaking the thick carpet, courtesy of the cane-sword, of course. Doesn’t exactly take a master detective to piece that one together.

It doesn’t take a master detective to deduce that it is a tremendous honour to be allowed to tend to Liam when he’s this vulnerable.
