Summary
"Idiot, idiot, idiot", are chanting children in the muddy street. Arthur stops, a bit dazzled. He brings his hand to his forehead to shield his eyes and his heart aches watching their dancing figures in the steaming light. They hop in circles around a tall, skinny boy with large ears, who spins on himself to smile at them ... (you can watch this story trailer on youtube).

Bookmarker's Notes
This story snuck up on me. It's set in canon storyline/time, but diverges to allow a unique take on Merlin and his relationships with all the other characters. It's a Gen story, with a background relationship between Arthur and Gwen. But the primary platonic / brotherly relationship is between Merlin & Arthur. You will need a boxful of hankies at the end - you're warned.
I read this across a week whilst on holiday in sunny Tuscany - the last few chapters while I was sitting by a swimming pool which had been invaded by a couple of families with their boisterous children. So it was rather embarrassing to be sitting there, a handful of tissues in one hand, kindle in the other, and tears streaming down my face, sobbing away. It's been a while since a story sideswiped me in the way this one did, but wow. Yeah the ending(s) might have been telegraphed slightly, but that did not detract from the read.
On a side note - this story was written in French and then translated by the author into English. For the most part, this is not a problem, but there *are* some obvious translation errors, and ones which are repeated multiple times and become a little wearing. But if you can put all that to one side (and I encourage you to do so), then this is an excellent story.
I hope to read more from the author in the future.

Summary
In a world where Omegas are the property of the elite Alphas, locked away and treasured by those wealthy enough to buy them, John never questioned his flatmate's secondary gender. Sherlock Holmes was an Alpha through-and through.
Wasn't he?
A chance discovery turns the world on its head, and John is left grappling to come to terms with Sherlock's past as events conspire to threaten their future.

AO has never really appealed to me, but this story, by one of Sherlock fandom's excellent writers, is just so well written, and plotted, and the UST/RST, and the character development..and…and...and it just sucks you in. This has joined several other BeautifulFiction stories on my Kindle for savouring during the long vacation.

One of my favourite of Rhymer's SGA stories since it was first posted way back when. On the kindle for rereading many times.
Rodney as possibly the unwitting hero of the story. A tonne of Sheppard whump. An interesting AU of the Genii and Atlantis worlds but you can still see the canon cultures coming through. A good read all round, but i would dearly love a follow-on sometime, as there seemed to be much more to explore…if the author ever had the wish to revisit.

Bookmarker's Notes
Absolutely sublime Sherlock-POV story, following his and John's gradual move towards a relationship. And when I say 'Sherlock-POV' I mean it - it may take a while to get to grips with the way this is written, but it's his mind that we are inhabiting and through which we see the story unfold, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the structure of the language reflects Sherlocks thought processes. But it's totally worth it - a gem.
Understandably noted as one of the classic BBC Sherlock fan fictions, and rightly so.
