While his curious mind is left unable to stop poking at this new perspective on Lan Wangji, circumstances in the Cloud Recesses begin to change and Wei Wuxian is suddenly presented with life-altering opportunities.
Maybe Gusu isn’t so bad after all?

The prospect has, for the most part, been comforting. But as the academic year wears on, he finds his work increasingly taking a backseat to Wen Qing's plans to unseat, or at least unsettle, their Head of Faculty, and Lan Wangji begins to look beyond the library walls. (Any influence from local chaos gremlin Wei Wuxian will not be acknowledged at this time, thank you very much.)

After Cloud Recesses burns, Wen Xu brings Lan Wangji — the last Lan — back to Nightless City as his prize. Not to be outdone, his brother Wen Chao soon returns with a prize of his own: the Jiang Sect's senior disciple, Wei Wuxian.
The Wens will come to regret this particular set of choices.

Except, there's something very suspicious going on in the Imperial Palace, and while Wei Wuxian might not be able to help Lan Wangji in solving it, the unassuming and soft-spoken "Prince-Concubine Mo" sure can.

Summary
Lan Zhan doesn't know what to make of Wei Ying. He knew - or at least knew of - most of the people in his department, but he had never seen this person before. Wei Ying, with his full sleeves of tattoos and carefree smile and pretty red ribbon in his hair waltzed into Lan Zhan's life without understanding the impact he had on the other boy.
Wei Ying is everything Lan Zhan is not, so it doesn't make sense that he seems to adamant about helping Lan Zhan open up and trust him.
Because of Wei Ying, Lan Zhan does things he never would have even humored the idea of. Because of Wei Ying, Lan Zhan comes to one of the biggest realizations of his life.
