But as Henry lies pressed against him in the too-tight top bunk, the rise and fall of his chest peaceful in a way he deserves, Alex whispers the words he’d held back all those times. They’re still just for him, just for him and the moon that’s washing the bedroom in a silvery glow. One day they’ll be for Henry, when he’s ready, but for now, they’re just for him.
“I love you.”
He punctuates it with a kiss on Henry’s forehead, promising himself patience, and knowing the wait will be worth it.
Alex will love and love and love, and wait and wait and wait, and Henry won’t know until he’s ready to know.

“Well, I highly doubt that, Alex,” Henry assures him. “Professor? Could you review this sample? I’m not sure what we’re seeing. There are some spots we don’t see on the example slide.”
Professor Frizzle (McKinnon) comes over, adjusting her glasses before leaning into the microscope and analyzing it with a perfectly straight face.
“Ah. I see.”
“Cut it to me straight, Professor,” Alex starts, pushing a hand through his hair. “Am I doomed?”
“Well, no, at least not from anything in the cheek swab. I… Well, Mr. Claremont-Diaz, those are dead sperm cells.”
Well. Yeah. There’s that.

There's a presence next to him, someone standing at his side, seemingly debating on whether or not they should take a seat in the recently vacated barstool. He can't look. He can't look. He wants to look so badly, but it feels as if his lungs had exhaled every bit of air they'dd been filled with and he's been left floundering for another gasp of oxygen.
Don't look, don't look, don't look, he tells himself, the grip on his glass so tight that his knuckles are white. Jesus Christ, he needs to get a grip. His guards are all up, his senses heightened because this is his first time back in London. But god, the chances of running into Henry, realistically, are 1 in almost 9 million. It's not Henry. It became a thing.
At first, Alex was hesitant, certain that he was intruding on Henry’s personal space. But Henry didn’t mind. He slept better with Alex by his side, too.
But then Alex started coming into Henry’s bed more frequently; sometimes just when he couldn’t sleep or felt lonely. Or cold. Alex insisted that Henry’s bed was more comfortable and his room was better for sleeping because the bright street light outside Alex’s room was intrusive. Henry’s room faced the courtyard and was therefore darker. Basically, he made all sorts of excuses and Henry started to wonder about Alex’s true motivations…

June's fingers absently comb through his hair. “I need you to wake up, you little shit.” Her voice is soft and fond and something else that Alex can’t put his finger on. It could pass as the answer to his question, but Alex isn't convinced June heard him at all.
“Yeah,” he drawls, prying her hands off his face and taking a very deliberate step backward. “You’re really freaking me out here, Bug.”
June's demeanor changes. Out of nowhere, her eyes go stern as stone—and there's none of that eerie softness in her voice when she speaks again. Instead, loud enough to make Alex's ears ring, she commands:
“Wake up.”
OR: Alex never makes it to Kensington because fate has other plans. Nothing like a coma to put things in perspective, huh?
